English Department – Language Skills for a Global Future
At our Sports Grammar School, the English Department is committed to providing students with the linguistic and intercultural competencies essential for success in a globalised world. Our approach balances academic rigour with real-world relevance, empowering young athletes and learners to thrive both on and off the field.
Our Vision and Objectives
We believe that language is more than a tool – it is a gateway to understanding, connection, and opportunity. That is why our teaching focuses on:
- Confident Communication
Students learn to communicate fluently, appropriately, and effectively in diverse contexts – from everyday conversation to academic discourse and professional interaction. - Intercultural Competence
We foster an awareness of cultural perspectives and global challenges, encouraging open-mindedness, respect, and informed dialogue. - Independent Learning
Our learners develop strategies for autonomous language acquisition and refinement, equipping them for lifelong learning and international engagement. - Critical Thinking and Media Literacy
We promote analytical thinking, textual interpretation, and media competence – key skills in navigating complex information in the 21st century.
English in the Abitur – P4 Oral Examination
English can be chosen as a P4 subject in the final Abitur examinations. The oral exam provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their spoken proficiency and intellectual engagement in English.
The 30-minute-examination consists of:
- A 15-minute-prepared presentation on a curriculum-based topic (e.g. globalisation, migration, identity, technological progress, Shakespeare, etc.)
- A follow-up 15- minute-discussion that tests spontaneous language use, argumentation, and intercultural awareness
P4 candidates are expected to:
- Operate at a C1–C2 level (according to the CEFR)
- Express complex ideas with clarity, precision, and nuance
- Analyse and evaluate texts and media from a variety of genres and cultural backgrounds
- Engage in meaningful, well-structured conversations on contemporary and literary topics
Our English programme is designed to unlock potential, broaden horizons, and support the personal and academic development of each student. Whether on the international stage, at university, or in everyday life – our students are prepared to meet the future with confidence and competence.
Language empowers. At our school, we make it part of who you are.
